Are you looking for resources that will save your prep time, enhance your lessons, and expand teaching and learning beyond the classroom walls? Learn about these online treasure troves of multi-media content created for EFL/ESL teachers by fellow educators who share a passion for teaching, language learning, and video.

  • On Jan. 18th, at 4 pm GMT  (global times) , Mike will make a short presentation of Real English in Adobe Connect. The beginning of one lesson will be used as an example showing how Real English exercises and videos work together. Important: Precise information concerning Adobe Connect and be found here. Please come if you can. This is the introduction to week 2. This presentation will feature the first few exercises of a Real English lesson. The presentation is designed to show how pictures, text, video and "teacher audio" are used to make spontaneous speech understandable, and how students learn while discovering the difference betweeen controlled and natural speech.

Choose a lesson, watch the video without subtitles, and then click on Exercise 1. Follow the instructions.


Assignment 2

After having gone through 2 lessons or more, write a short essay explaining how you would you use a Real English video and lesson with your students.

Evaluate the lessons in relation to your own needs. What works, or would work for you in your classroom? What does not work for you?


Also, write about practical concerns, for example, 

- Do you have a classroom projector hooked up to your computer? This allows you go through the lesson with your students in class and perhaps assign the unfinished exercises as homework, assuming your students have internet access at home. 

- If you do not project to a classroom screen, can you share your own online computer with student(s), for very small groups or one-on-one courses? 

- Would you make up your own exercises for the videos? If Yes: in all cases, or only if you had the time?


Please post your essay in the body of your message on our Yahoo Group. Click on "Post" to begin a new message or "reply" to reply to a colleague. Please use the subject heading "Week 2 (Your Name)" to help keep things organized. The Yahoo Group is surely the best tool to facilitate discussion between participants.

  • Discussion on our Yahoo Group: Why emphasize the importance of realia? Isn't the wide range of accents confusing for beginners? What about the fast delivery of speech? Why make everything more difficult for beginners and intermediate students? What's the point? Don't students need slow, controlled examples of speech in order to learn?



Week 3 (01/25/10): (Moderator: Ryan)



Materials for Participants:

  • "How to" screen-cast demos of the assignments.



  • Take a quiz and send the results to: Teacher Code = EVOteacher; Class ID = EVOclass.
  • Log in to eslvideo.com with: Email = evovideo2010@yahoo.com; password = EVOvideo (Note the password is case sensitive.)
  • Go to "My Account" and click on "Scores" to see how your quiz score (step 1) was organized.
  • Click on the Join a Class button and fill out the form with: Teacher Code = EVOteacher; Class ID = EVOclass.
  • (Log in with Step 2 details.) Click on "My Account" and click on "Classes" to see all members of the class (including yourself as you just "joined" in the previous step.)
  • Create a quiz. View your quiz. Edit your quiz as needed.
  • (Log in with Step 2 details.) Click on "Classes" and "Show me the email address of everyone in: EVOclass." Send the quiz you created to the EVOclass.

  • Explore the quizzes/ exercises I offer at EnglishCafe. It is free to join this online community, but membership is required to view and create quizzes. This first sample is a quiz on the pronunciation patterns of phrasal verbs. It accompanies a video I posted on YouTube on the same topic (Lesson 19). This second sample is part of a lesson I made exclusively for the EnglishCafe community, and the topic is spelling patterns in English. Choose a video from my YouTube collection dated before May 2009 and create your own follow-up exercise using the quiz builder on EnglishCafe. (Click here to view a tutorial on how to use the quiz builder.) Be sure to state in the quiz description that it supplements one of my videos and then provide the link to that video. Once your quiz is published on EnglishCafe, share your link on the Participants' Page here on our wiki.

Biographical Statements



Branka Marceta:


I am currently holding the position of a Coordinator of Technology projects at OTAN, Outreach and Technical Assistance Network. I presented at national, state, and regional conferences including TESOL and CATESOL. I came to OTAN from Milpitas Adult School in the South San Francisco Bay area, where I taught ESL and Office Occupations both at the adult school program and in the local correctional facility. I earned my Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from San Jose State University. Before Milpitas, I had taught ESL/EFL in Toronto, Canada and Novi Sad, Serbia, to learners from all over the world, ages 5-75, from a variety of backgrounds and in a variety in learning environments: one-on-one tutoring, government-funded programs, and intensive English programs to name a few. I am active in the technology interest section of CATESOL (TELL-IG) as the group’s Web master and Electronic Village organizer, presenter and participant. I am looking forward to our EVO session and sharing with and learning from all the ESL/EFL colleagues and fellow English language learners from all over the world.



Mike Marzio:


Michael Marzio BA, Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA, USA and Masters work in English Education at NYU; practical experience creating and maintaining a language school in the south of France for companies.


Until recent semi-reirement, I had been teaching, translating, and interpreting while helping run my school. Have made several EFL video programs including "We Mean Business" with Longman UK, "The Adventures of Charlie McBride", and the ongoing Real English® project. Now that I'm semi-reired, I enjoy working even more than before making new videos with online lessons and teaching F2F on a volunteer basis.



Jennifer Lebedev:


 ESL/ EFL teacher since 1996. Materials writer since 2000. Experienced teacher trainer. Ran the ESL program of an IEP in Boston from 2003 to 2005. Online instructor since 2007 (videos, podcasts, private lessons). Consultant since 2008. Currently collaborating with Pearson Longman and EnglishCafe.



Ryan Detwiler:


ESL / EFL teacher 1996-98, 2001-2002, and part time 2009. Co-developed ESL software series, Short Takes Interactive in 2007. Admin of eslvideo.com since 2007. Cora Chen


I'm an ESL instructor at City College of San Francisco. I received my master’s degree in English from San Francisco State University. As a curriculum developer for the KQED Education Network, I have developed ESOL lessons on a variety of topics based on KQED/PBS television productions, and these lesson plans have been published by KQED Education Network online and in booklets. I am honored to have the chance to co-moderate for the EVO Video 2010 session with such a wonderful team. Cora's ESL page
